Soft Hold ritual cards

The ritual
cards.

Four cards. Each night you choose the one that matches what you are carrying. You speak the phrase — inwardly or out loud. Then you stay.

The phrases are yours to discover when the cards arrive. Each one is a direct instruction — delivered to the nervous system, not the thinking mind.

Contain · Release · Return

Repetition teaches the body.
The ritual becomes the signal.

Why does castor oil
release emotion?

Castor oil has been used in somatic, Ayurvedic, and naturopathic practice for centuries — long before the science caught up with the experience. It is not a metaphor. It works physiologically.

Ricinus communis

Applied to the lower abdomen, castor oil penetrates the skin and warms the underlying fascia — the connective tissue where the body stores emotional charge. It is not absorbed into the bloodstream. It works at the tissue level, creating the physical warmth that signals to the autonomic nervous system: it is safe to release what you are holding.

Fascia
Where Emotion Lives
Research in somatic therapy and trauma science increasingly points to the fascia — the connective tissue that wraps every organ and muscle — as a primary site of stored emotional charge. Castor oil, applied externally, penetrates the skin and directly contacts this tissue. Warmth softens it. Softened fascia releases.
Ricinoleic
The Active Compound
Approximately 90% of castor oil is ricinoleic acid — an unusual fatty acid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. When absorbed through the skin, it activates EP3 prostaglandin receptors, reducing local inflammation and promoting smooth muscle relaxation. A tense, braced body begins to let go.
Vagal
The Nervous System Connection
The lower abdomen is one of the primary zones of vagal nerve activity — the nerve that governs the body's rest and digest response. Warmth applied here activates the parasympathetic nervous system directly. This is why the oil works before the cards are chosen. The body is already beginning to shift.

"The body doesn't release because you've understood something. It releases because it finally feels safe enough to let go. Castor oil creates that safety — at the tissue level, before the mind has said a word."

When to use it.
What happens after.

Think of it like a vat for your emotions. If your car is making a strange noise, you don't ignore it and keep driving harder. You pull over. You give it attention. You treat it with care.

Your body is the same. The emotion is the noise. Soft Hold™ is the pull-over.

Use When
Something is making a noise in there.
What Happens After
The noise settles. You keep moving.

Contain. Release. Return. Three states. One system. Used consistently, it becomes the body's signal that emotion is allowed to move — not because you force it, but because you have created a reliable container for it.

💔
After a break-up, before bed.
You don't stop. You carry it. The grief lives in your chest, your jaw, the back of your throat. The body doesn't know the relationship ended — it just knows it's still holding.
After
You set it down long enough to sleep. Not resolved. Placed.
🔁
When you can't stop replaying something.
Like a car making a noise you can't locate. You keep driving, keep listening, keep tensing. The mind loops because the body is still holding the charge — waiting for a signal that it's safe to release.
After
The replaying slows. Not because you've solved it — because the body has been heard.
🌧
When you feel heavy but don't know why.
Sometimes the emotion doesn't have a name. It doesn't need one. It's accumulated — news, other people's pain, the low hum of a world that asks a lot. It's in there whether the mind acknowledges it or not.
After
The weight lifts slightly. Space returns. You remember who you are underneath it.
😶
When you need to cry but can't.
The body is holding too tightly. Braced. Managed. The emotion is there but blocked — like water behind a dam that's not sure it's allowed to open.
After
The oil, the warmth, the weight — the body often knows how to release once it feels held.
📅
When you're dreading tomorrow.
The anxiety lives in the body before it lives in the mind. You feel it in the stomach, the shoulders, the shallow breath. Thinking about it doesn't help. The body needs something it can feel.
After
The dread softens. Not because tomorrow changed — because you stopped fighting yourself tonight.
🌍
When the world has been too much today.
You absorb it. Other people's grief, the relentlessness of bad news, the demands of being a functioning person in a complicated world. It accumulates like sediment — layer by layer, day by day.
After
You drain the vat. You sleep lighter. You wake up more like yourself.

"I didn't expect something so simple to cut through months of not being able to cry. The third night I used it, I finally could."

"I'd been waking up at 3am replaying an argument for weeks. This was the first thing that actually interrupted the loop — not my mind, my body."

"After a really hard break-up I started using this every evening. It didn't fix anything. But it meant I stopped waking up braced. That was everything."

Soft Hold
Castor oil applied to the lower abdomen penetrates the fascia — the connective tissue where the body stores emotional charge. Ricinoleic acid reduces inflammation and promotes smooth muscle relaxation. The vagal nerve activity in this zone shifts the body into parasympathetic rest. It works at the tissue level, before the mind has said a word.
Pink (Release) for emotional heaviness — tenderness, overwhelm, grief, being unable to relax. Black (Contain) for overstimulation — stress, anxiety, a mind that won't switch off. If you carry both tonight, start with whichever is most present.
The phrases are yours to discover when the cards arrive. Each is a direct instruction to the nervous system — not affirmation, but a statement that names what you are carrying and gives the body permission to set it down.
Most commonly in the evening before bed — but it can be used at any point when the body is carrying something it needs to release. Morning after a difficult night. Afternoon after a hard conversation. Consistency over time is what teaches the body to release on cue.
